2.satellite project aimed at finding Earth-like planets has launched from Russia’s Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.A French-led satellite project has launched into space on a mission to discover Earth-like planets that are beyond our solar system. The $225-million COROT project is based around a telescope that is expected to find planets that range in size and shape.Astronomers are aware of the existence of other planets, however, current technology only allows for the accurate identification of Jupiter-style gas giants. The French National Space Studies Center is working alongside partners from the European Space Agency, Spain, Germany, Austria, Brazil and Belgium.
3.In the closing months of 2006 spam volumes jumped enormously. According to e-mail filtering firm Postini, spam volumes increased by 73% in the three months to December. "92.6% of all e-mail messages are spam," said Dan Druker, spokesman for Postini. "That's the highest it's ever been."

The discovery by Nasa's robotic rovers of a watery past on Mars has topped an eagerly awaited list of the 10 key scientific advances of 2004. Compiled each year by Science magazine, the list has always divided opinion, and this year's has proved no exception. The rovers triumphed in a strong field, including the discovery of a dwarf human species in Indonesia.Runner-up status went to the mind-boggling discovery that a dwarf species of human - dubbed "the Hobbit" by some - had survived on the Indonesian island of Flores until 13,000 years ago. The study, published in the rival journal Nature, had seemed a strong contender for the top spot.

The world's biggest steelmaker, Arcelor Mittal, is to buy Mexican steel producer Sicartsa for $1.4bn (£730m). The company, which operates in Mexico and Texas, reported revenues of $954m in 2004. "This acquisition creates a strong and well-balanced long carbon player in the Americas," said Arcelor Mittal chief financial officer Aditya Mittal. "With the Mexican market expected to grow by up to 6% per year over the next 10 years this is the ideal time to expand our presence in this country."
